Understanding Eating Disorders in Diabetes Mellitus (EDDM)
Recognizing the signs, finding support, and seeking treatment

What Is Eating Disorders in Diabetes Mellitus (EDDM)?
Eating Disorders in Diabetes Mellitus (EDDM) refers to a range of disordered eating behaviors that affect individuals with any type of diabetes. Often incorrectly called “diabulimia,” EDDM includes the intentional misuse of insulin or diabetes medications, extreme food restriction (especially of carbohydrates), and other traditional eating disorder behaviors like bingeing, purging, or compulsive exercise. These behaviors are often used to lose weight or control body shape but can lead to severe medical complications, including diabetic ketoacidosis and long-term organ damage.
What are common warning signs of Eating Disorders in Diabetes Mellitus (EDDM)?
The warning signs of Eating Disorders in Diabetes Mellitus (EDDM) impact both mental health and physical regulation. These may include:
- Insulin/Medication Misuse: Restricting or deliberately skipping insulin doses or other diabetic medications.
- Medical Complications: Experiencing recurring episodes of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or persistent poor blood sugar control/elevated glucose levels.
- Disordered Eating: Fixation on food and weight, coupled with disordered carbohydrate intake (which may involve restriction and/or bingeing).
- Body Image & Activity: Increased body dissatisfaction and/or engaging in compulsive or excessive exercise.
Is Eating Disorders in Diabetes Mellitus (EDDM) specific to one type of diabetes?
EDDM can occur in both Type 1 (EDDMT1) and Type 2 diabetes (EDDMT2). For example, individuals with Type 1 diabetes may skip or reduce insulin doses as a form of weight control, while those with Type 2 may engage in restrictive eating or misuse medication.
What are risk factors for Eating Disorders in Diabetes Mellitus (EDDM)?
According to our partners at Monte Nido, risk factors include a history of eating disorders, body dissatisfaction, mental health challenges like depression or anxiety, and the psychological burden of diabetes management.
What type of treatment is available for Eating Disorders in Diabetes Mellitus (EDDM)?
Treatment for EDDM requires a specialized, integrated approach that addresses both the eating disorder and the complexities of diabetes management. Medical oversight is critical to stabilize blood glucose levels, prevent diabetic ketoacidosis, and monitor complications related to insulin misuse.
Again, the best course of treatment will vary by individual. We recommend working with your medical providers to develop a treatment plan. Check out our patient advocacy page to learn more about eating disorder treatment options and how to advocate for yourself in a medical setting.

Eating Disorders & Diabetes (EDDM) Information
People with diabetes can sometimes develop disordered eating habits, like skipping or misusing insulin, restricting food, or over-exercising to control weight. These behaviors can overlap with other eating disorders and lead to serious health risks. Recovery focuses on balancing physical health with emotional healing through specialized, integrated treatment and professional support.
Lesser-known Eating Disorders: What you should know
Some eating disorders aren’t widely recognized but can still cause significant harm. Orthorexia nervosa, for example, involves an obsession with “clean” or “pure” eating that can lead to malnutrition and anxiety. Though not officially listed in the DSM-V, these disorders are taken seriously by professionals for their physical and psychological effects.
