This presentation will provide foundational information to those seeking to better understand the experience of LGBTQ+ people who are navigating eating disorder recovery. The presenter will provide information regarding the current trends in eating disorder care for LGBTQ+ people, as well as treatment challenges, and factors to consider in this work. Finally, case studies will be utilized to help individuals appreciate the complexities within this work, and the importance of attending to the intersection of diversity variables and eating disorders.

Dr. Julia Sadusky is a post-doctoral fellow at EDCare’s eating disorder treatment center in Denver, CO. She also currently offers trainings to increase education and improve clinical practice related to sexual and gender identity. She has worked primarily with patients navigating eating disorders, substance use, trauma, and co-occurring concerns throughout her clinical work at a substance use residential treatment, outpatient mental health clinics, and university counseling centers. Dr. Sadusky completed her doctorate at Regent University in Virginia. At Regent, her research experiences and clinical training focused primarily on the study of sexual and gender identity. As part of the Sexual and Gender Identity Institute there, Dr. Sadusky consulted with many individuals and families from all over the country who were navigating gender dysphoria.  Recent publications include “Approaching Gender Dysphoria” (published by Grove Ethics) and “Understanding Transgender Identities,” (published through Baker Academic). She is currently coauthoring a book titled “Emerging Gender Identities: Understanding the Diverse Experiences of Today’s Youth” (forthcoming from Brazos Press in August of 2020).

Dr. Sadusky enjoys being outdoors, brewing homemade kombucha, and cheering on her favorite NFL team – Go Eagles!
